CASCADIA ROASTER’S COMPETITION

REGISTRATION FOR CASCADIA ROASTER’S COMPETITION, CO-HOSTED WITH ROAST MAGAZINE IS NOW OPEN.

KEY DATES & FACTS-

  • Last day to register: Oct. 30 at 3pm, or until spaces are filled (limited to 50 roasters).
  • Cost to compete: $75 (general). Limited number of discounted tickets ($60) available for Buckman Coffee Factory members. Cost of shipping applys to of town roasters who wish to have their coffee mailed to them.
  • Green coffee pick-up begins TUESDAY, OCT. 9, STARTING @10AM.
  • Last day of pick-up ends TUESDAY, OCT. 30, ENDING @ 3PM.
  • All submissions (3LBS of roasted coffee) must be received by Buckman no later than WEDNESDAY, OCT. 31 @ 3PM.

The Pacific Northwest is home to a spectacular array of talented roasters. Inspired by the diversity of styles in the coffee community, the Cascadia Roaster’s Competition was conceived to celebrate the art of roasting in a fun and engaging event.

WHO CAN COMPETE?

Cascadia is open to roasters of all levels of experience, styles and regions –from aspiring hobbyists to seasoned professionals. Live outside the Portland-metro area? No problem, see details below on how to participate. A humble $75 ensures that a wide range of competitors will throw their triers in the fire.

ALL ROASTERS WILL ROAST THE SAME MYSTERY GREEN COFFEE.

The fee includes: 20lbs of green coffee. Competitors must submit 3LBS of roasted coffee in order to qualify. While we’ll provide you with the green coffee, we will not provide any further information such as its origin, its variety or how it was processed until the day of the competition on Nov. 3. In other words, all roasters will have the same coffee, the same knowledge about the green coffee, and the same chance to use your skills as a roaster to bring out the beauty of the coffee. Use your intuition, your senses, your skills and your tastebuds to work your magic. After your coffee has been evaluated by a panel of qualified judges on Nov. 3, you will receive valuable feedback on your roast. We reserve the right to reject any submissions if we have reason to believe is not the official competition coffee that we provide entrants. This is a friendly competition, please respect these basic rules.

HOW WILL THE COFFEE BE EVALUATED?

We have two brackets for the competition: Judge’s Selection (which includes a panel of professional, experienced coffee industry folks) and People’s Choice (the more democratic selection, which is open to all participants/guests who attend the event on Nov. 3rd to decide). Judge’s Selection will base their evaluation on favorable aroma, pleasant flavor, balanced sweetness and acidity, agreeable body and finish. All coffee for both brackets will be batch brewed (using Wilbur Curtis drip brewers) using a 15:1 (water to coffee) ratio and identical grind.

GREEN COFFEE PICK-UP @ BUCKMAN COFFEE FACTORY FOR LOCAL ROASTERS.

Roasters in Portland, OR can pick-up their coffee beginning at 10am on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Last day for green coffee pick-up is Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 3pm. We will offer ongoing ‘pick-up hours’ during the following times, only:

  • MON-THUR, 10AM-3PM.
  • FIRST DAY OF PICK-UP: TUE OCT. 9, BEGINNING @ 10AM.
  • LAST DAY OF PICK-UP: TUE OCT. 30, BEGINNING @ 3PM.

We cannot accommodate coffee pick-up outside of these times.

ROASTED COFFEE DROP-OFF @ BUCKMAN COFFEE FACTORY.

Roasters may drop-off their 3LBS of roasted coffee anytime during our business hours:

  • M-F, 9AM-4PM.
  • FINAL DAY FOR RECEIVING ROASTED COFFEE: WED OCT. 31 BY 3PM.

NOT FROM PORTLAND? NOT A PROBLEM!

As long as you register on or before OCT. 19th, we can mail competition coffee to roasters outside the Portland area. When you register to compete, be sure to select the ‘Out of Town’ option. To make shipping arrangements, please email: steph@buckmancoffee.com by OCT. 19th with your address and any other relevant info, after you sign-up for the competition. Coffee will be mailed to you via USPS for $20, at your expense (fee is included in ‘Out-of-tow’ ticket fee. Please be sure to provide us with a valid mailing address, where large packages can be accepted. We cannot be held responsible for mail that is lost or stolen once it leaves our facility. IMPORTANT NOTE: you must mail back the roasted coffee to Buckman Coffee Factory in time for us to accept your coffee.

NO COST TO WATCH OR DRINK ON NOV 3RD.

Join us at the Buckman Coffee Factory on November 3rd for an afternoon celebrating the art of roasting. With up to 50 roasters presenting their best, Buckman will be buzzing and brewing with coffee. Rowdy spectators, competitor’s friends and coffee fans are all welcome and audience participation is encouraged. Coffee (of course), beer, cider, non-alcoholic beverages and a food truck will all be available.

BENEFIT FOR INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S COFFEE ALLIANCE. & P:EAR BARISTA SCHOOL.

This year, we’re taking this opportunity to shine a light on two important coffee-focused organizations who are amplifying coffee as a way to make a positive impact. While spectator admission is free, we’re holding a raffle for the the International Women’s Coffee Alliance as well as accepting donations on behalf of the P:EAR BARISTA SCHOOL.

The mission of the International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA) is to empower women in the international coffee community to achieve meaningful and sustainable lives; and to encourage and recognize the participation of women in all aspects of the coffee industry.

P:ear builds positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth through education, art and recreation to affirm personal worth and create more meaningful and healthier lives. The P:ear Barista School offers an in-depth, on-site, ten week training exploring all aspects of becoming a barista in today’s competitive market – from understanding bean sourcing, to milk textures, to customer service and basic money management. The program helps to build their confidence and their resumes, and provides consistent, on-going mentorship while youth engage in the activities associated with learning the beautiful art and science of preparing and serving exceptional coffee.
